ついに始まった大企業の参入
ロイター通信やウォールストリート紙によると、米Clear Channel Communication社は今年５月から、所有する各ラジオ局の番組をPodcastを使って配信すると発表した。Clear Channel社は米国内に1200に及ぶラジオ局を所有する大手メディア会社。これまでには地方の小さなラジオ局がPodcastを行う例はあったが、このような大手企業がPodcastに参入するのは初めて。
５月から始まるPodcastでは人気の朝晩組の中のコメディコーナーなど、番組の一部を楽しめるようになる。しかし、音楽番組は複雑な権利関係を避けるために含まれない。当面は”しゃべり”に焦点をあてた番組がその対象になる。
Clear Channel社は視聴者との関係を深め、Podcastやウェブサイトでの広告スポットを販売することで広告収入の増強を狙う。Podcastだけでなく、Videoのコンテンツや高品質の音楽コンテンツなどを含めた総合的なサービスで視聴者を引きつけたい考え。おそらく、初期の収益は非常に限られた物になるだろうが、このような大企業の参入により、この市場に多くの投資が行われる可能性が高い。将来的にはPodcastを含むオンラインでの広告収入がかなりの割合を占める事が期待されている。昨年のClear Channel社の業績は約４千億円に上る。
Clear Channel社のオンライン事業部長であるEvan Harrison氏は、”成功の鍵は、視聴者と広告主との関係を強くする事”と語る。Harrison氏はClear Channel社のオンライン事業戦略のためにTime WarnerのAOL部門から引き抜かれた人物。すでに成熟したラジオ産業で収益を伸ばすのは難しい。遅まきながら、メディア産業の一角を占めるラジオ業界がオンラインというメディアに手を伸ばし始めた。
